What is StoneMill Media?

StoneMill Media is a one-man production company located in Southeast Wisconsin, halfway between Madison and Milwaukee. StoneMill Media provides Multimedia, Animation and Motion Graphics services to Video and Post Production Houses, Agencies and Corporations. These services include Flash animation, advanced Actionscript programming, interactive websites, 3D animation, After Effects animation and post production work. News

New Awards - StoneMill Media has received three new awards for work completed during the past year. In November, the StoneMill Media Demo Reel won a WAVE award in the category of animation. This past summer, the demo reel also received a Telly Award. The Mercury Marine SmartCraft Simulator was awarded an MCAI Merit award in the category of interactive programming.


Block Island Lighthouse - Constructed in 1874 for the lofty sum of $75,000 (around $1.4 million today) the lighthouse located on the southeast banks of Block Island, R.I. is the only one of its kind in existence. With its blend of Gothic Revival and Italianate architectural styling and the unusual duplex living quarters, this lighthouse lends itself perfectly to a long term 3D recreation project.

What is a 3D recreation exactly? First floor plans, elevations, photo resources and building history documents are all gathered up. Next the entire structure is built to scale in a 3D animation program. This is not the same as using architectural CAD which could handle the building itself quite well but would not be able to match the quality of the end image. Once the structures have been built they need to be textured. Every brick wall, window frame and porch floorboard will need several images mapped to create a realistic look and texture. Next a scene is composed for the final image. Lighting and camera settings are determined. Extras items such as fencing, outbuildings and plants are created. Several renderings will be created and the final image will be assembled in Photoshop.

The progress of this project can be followed under the Workbench section of the Flash site. Currently all the main external modeling has been completed and texturing is under way. New progress images are updated regularly.


Mercury Marine Axius / SmartCraft Simulator - The Mercury Marine SmartCraft Technology simulator has received an MCAI Merit Award for interactive Programming. This application is the second of two versions created for Mercury Marine.

The first version is a narrated multilingual training program designed to educate boat dealers on how the new Axius navigation system functions and what issues to watch for during boat delivery. The interface includes all the control items that would be found on the boat and all functions related to the training were available. This includes functions like GPS waypoint tracking and automatic position holding. Wind and water current speed and direction are adjustable. The Axius system features 360 degree joystick navigation for maneuvering. It does this by changing the speed, angle and direction of each engine independently. This functionality is fully simulated in the application using the same types of engine calculations as the Axius system. For practice, the users can drive the boat around the marina or in open water. For more challenge there is a dock maze.

The second version was created as a marketing game for use on the SmartCraft website as well as at trade shows. All the lessons were removed and some interface changes were made. The application was reprogrammed to exaggerate the boat's movements, giving a more game-like feel. A timed slalom course was added out in the open water area of the map.

Each version has an interface that was created in a 3D animation program for a realist look and movements. Each version required extensive Flash programming in Actionscript to accurately simulate the system.


Cave of the Mounds Prehistoric Animation - Meet the Nautiloid, a distant relative to the squid and octopus. This guy is one of several animations created for Cave of the Mounds. The 3D animations and After Effects compositions of 3D animation, live video and 2D stills were used within their welcome video to illustrate how the caves were formed and show the origins of the fossils found within the cave.
